YMCA of San Francisco (YSF), together with University of San Francisco and the University of Delaware developed the Equity Interns Fellowship. A pilot cohort of 12 undergraduates worked with youth and their families in YSF’s Power Scholars Program. Fellows examined issues of equity in education and society, met with relevant leaders and mentored youths. The evaluation that I designed for this pilot effort included pre-, mid- and post-experience surveys, in-person meetings during the summer session, and concept maps with Fellows, as well as observations of them in the classroom, classroom teacher surveys and parent surveys. Fellows exhibited a strong sense of belonging and ownership of the program. The experience was foundational for some and strongly influenced academic and career plans for all participants.
