To inform the development of a communications app for parole officers and their charges, I recruited parolees and formerly incarcerated people, and conducted in-person interviews at various sites in San Francisco and Oakland. Officers were interviewed by phone. Of particular interest were the negative effects on job seeking that come with having to meet parole requirements or simply having a record. Ethnographic interviews examined challenges experienced by job seekers while also dealing with the correctional system. Officer interviews examined their perspectives and motivations around their work and supporting parolees.
